Project Presentation
The present findings pointed to several crucial factors important for the design of successfully integrated European teaching-learning materials:
1. The issue selected for an integrated curriculum should be of interdisciplinary character, connected to everyday life and common to pupils in different European countries.
2. The teaching-learning materials should not be too controlling and steering, but rather a resource material for the teachers to use according to their needs and possibilities.
3. The teachers should be familiar with the theoretical background of the project.
4. Sequence designers should be aware of the major differences in contents of European curricula/syllabuses, both regarding the content, and the time limits for teaching the selected area.
5. The content of teaching-learning material should cover more than one or two years of compulsory school to facilitate for the teachers to select the selection of an adequate material that matches the age of the pupils.
6. One should be aware of differences in teaching traditions between different countries, different schools and in-service teachers.
7. There should be a balance between the integrated subjects, strong connections to the real-life events and a clear synergy effect between the subjects.
8. Questions and problems used in assessments should be not only focused on subject matter but also on a more holistic character of knowledge.
9. Implementation of the same sequence in different countries should be assessed according to a standardized protocol.
10. A part of the assessment covering pupils’ interest, engagement and attitudes should be common for all designed sequences.
11. The designer of the particular material should be engaged in the implementation of the
material in other cooperating country.
In conclusion, the design and the use of European teaching-learning materials appears beneficial for science understanding and the project has a clear potential for further development of European teaching-learning materials if the above mentioned focus points will be considered.
